The Department of Vehicle and Transportation Engineering originated from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1921 and merged in Shanghai Railway University in 1973. In 2000 the Shanghai Railway University and Tongji University merged together and formed the Institute of Rail Transit. In 2024 the Institute of Rail Transit, the former College of Transportation Engineering and the National Maglev Transportation Engineering R&D Center merged together and formed the Department of Vehicle and Transportation Engineering.
At present, the Department of Vehicle and Transportation Engineering has 32 faculties, including 8 professors, 11 associate professors and 13 assistant professors/lecturers. It has a talent training system that integrates undergraduate, master, doctoral degrees, and has established cooperative relations with many companies in the rail transit industry and many worldwide well-known universities, forming a new training mode of global talent for railway disciplines.
The Department of Vehicle and Transportation Engineering has many important research platforms and large-scale facilities, including the National Railway/Maglev Science Education Base, Shanghai Multi-network Multi-mode Rail Transit Innovation Center, Higher-speed EMU Railway Industry Research Center, Rail Transit and Maglev Service Safety Innovation Center, and National Railway and Maglev Science Base of China Railway Society. Our department also has the “Tongji University Jiading Campus Comprehensive Rail Transit Test Line”, which is the only one platform for the rail transit comprehensive tests in China’s Universities. This test line includes a 790 m line, 35‰ ramp line, various ballast bed structures, open signal system, 7 major special testing subsystems for rail transit equipment, the “three stations and two intervals” rail transit operation control system, and two different types of marshalling trains. It provides the test platform for developing core technologies of China’s urban rail transit.
In response to the needs of China’s transport traffic system featuring “integration, intelligence, environment-friendliness, and safety”, the Department of Vehicle and Transportation Engineering focuses on the research aspects, including rail vehicle design and system integration, train traction & braking and safety, intelligent operation and maintenance. In the past years, our department has undertaken a lot of key projects, including the National Science and Technology Support Project, the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and has awarded the First Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and several Provincial and Ministerial Science and Technology Awards.
Looking back, the Department of Vehicle and Transportation Engineering has achieved many outstanding fruits and has made great contribution to the China’s railway construction. Looking ahead, our department will focus on national strategies, strive to improve the quality of education and scientific research, and promote the construction of the “Double First-Class” disciplines.
Sincerely welcome to join the Department of Vehicle and Transportation Engineering.
