Undergraduate Study

College of Transportation Engineering has two undergraduate majors including Traffic Engineering and Transportation. The following are the details of these majors:

Traffic Engineering

The Traffic engineering program at Tongji University originated from the disciplines of Highway & Urban Roads and Urban Construction. Its history can be traced back to 1914 when the Civil Engineering Division was established at Tongji University, offering courses related to roads and railways. During the nationwide restructuring of higher education institutions beginning in 1952, the civil engineering programs of Tongji University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tsinghua University, Aurora University, and Zhejiang University were merged to form the Department of Railways and Highways at Tongji University, which established the Highway & Urban Roads and Railway Engineering programs. In 1973, the Railway Engineering program was transferred to Shanghai Institute of Railway Technology, while the Highway & Urban Roads program continued to develop at Tongji University.

In 1985, following the Ministry of Education's program catalogue, Tongji University established the first batch of "Traffic engineering" programs in China and began enrolling undergraduate students in this discipline. In 2000, with the merger of Shanghai Railway University and Tongji University, the faculty expertise in road engineering, railway engineering, traffic engineering, and transportation information engineering from both institutions was consolidated. This led to the gradual formation of the current Traffic engineering program, which consists of two specialized directions: Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineering and Road, Railway & Airport Engineering.

In 2010, the Traffic engineering program was among the first to be selected for the Ministry of Education's "Excellence Engineer Education and Training Program." It also passed the National Engineering Education Professional Certification in 2014 and 2017. In 2019, the program was among the first to be designated as a National "First-Class Major."

Transportation

The Transportation program at Tongji University was established in 1951 and has a nearly 70-year history of education, boasting a strong foundation and profound academic heritage. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the program primarily focused on cultivating talent in railway transportation. Subsequently, in response to evolving talent demands, the program continuously adjusted and optimized its training curriculum, adding a "International Trade and Transportation" track based on the "Railway Transportation" specialty. In 1998, following the adjustment of the undergraduate program catalog by the Ministry of Education, the "Railway Transportation" program was renamed "Transportation."

After 2000, the program further developed and strengthened its comprehensive advantages in land transportation education and introduced a new "Logistics Engineering" track in 2003. In terms of talent cultivation, the program has gradually developed distinct characteristics, with a primary focus on rail transit systems while also considering other modes of transportation. It covers the entire process of planning, design, and operational management, emphasizing. interdisciplinary approaches and the application of new technologies.

In 2010, the Transportation program was among the first to be selected for the Ministry of Education's "Excellence Engineer Education and Training Program" and passed the National Engineering Education Professional Certification three times in 2010, 2016, and 2019.
