Traffic Engineering

In 1979, the first traffic engineering lab of chinese mainland was established in Tongji University and it marked the birth of both traffic engineering disciplines and Tongji University. Following the lead of old generation scholars such as Prof. Pei-Kun Yang, Prof. Shang-Wu Zhou, Prof. Wei-Ci Xu, etc., our research is in the field of road traffic planning; design & management theories. Tongji University has also become the earliest one which enrolled the traffic engineering masters and doctors from Chinese mainland.

At present the department has 30 teachers, including 12 professors (including 2 winners of Thousand Talents Plan Awards, 1 Changjiang Scholar and 2 Chair Professors of Tongji University), 11 associate professors. Among these teachers, 1 people got the Outstanding Young teachers Fund of National Natural Science Foundation of China, 4 people were selected in the New Century Talents of Ministry of Education, 2 people were selected in the Phospherus Plan of Shanghai and 3 people were selected in the Pujiang Plan. In 2012, the first class disciplines of Traffic Engineering rank third nationally. The undergraduate major of traffic engineering of Tongji University rank first among more than 80 universities. After the 211 program and 985 program, the department built a series of top level research platforms, such as the Simulate Experiment Platform of Traffic Behavior and Traffic Safety, the Naturalistic Driving Experiment Team, the International Joint Lab of Traffic Safety, Research Center of Traffic Data which costs 30million yuan in all.

Following the process of urbanization and economic development, our traffic system changed from a single system to the multiple system. The development model of cities also changed from the system dominated by the single city to the comprehensive networking system cored by metropolis. After 30 years’ development, the department has got the ability to solve important theory problems meeting the demands of a comprehensive transportation system. We have proposed many new theories in the fields, such as comprehensive transportation planning; design, operation & management; safety & new energy which lead the development of our transportation industry. In the past five years, the department has hosted and completed more than 40 national scientific research projects including the Nation Science and Technology Support Project, National High-Technology Project (863) and NSFC. The total funds per year is over 30 million yuan in all. We have also achieved more than 10 advancement prizes of national and provincial science and technology and have edited more than 10 national and provincial standards.

To keep pace with the times, the department has got many spirits, such as objectivity, innovation and interdiscipline exploration. With these spitits, we are working hard to be the first-class department of the world. Recently, the department has got great achievements in talent training, scientific research, international communication, social services, etc.. In the past 30 years, the department has cultivated many excellent professionals who contribute in many industries including the government sectors, research institutions and companies.
