Team leader: Prof. Dr. Hongduo Zhao

Dr. Zhao is a professor of Tongji University. He is also the dean of Department of Road and Airport Engineering of Tongji University. He has got his PhD degree at Tongji University in 2007. He has been working in UC Davis during 2009 to 2010 as a visiting scholar. His research area is about intelligent road and airport pavement. He has established the asphalt pavement structure design method for airport of China, which considers the application and superposition of new generation large aircrafts. In recent years, he extends his research area to intelligent pavement. He is developing the intelligent precast concrete pavement system for airport.

Team members:

Dr. Jie Yuan is an associate professor in road and airport engineering, and the deputy director of Airport Engineering Research Center, Tongji University. Dr. Yuan received his Ph.D. degree in transportation engineering from Tongji University in 2001. His primary research interests are airport infrastructure management and maintenance. In the past decade, Dr. Yuan led the research projects on airport pavement performance analysis, asset management, rapid repairness and preventive maintenance. He also developed the first management system for airport pavement (CAPMS) in China.

Dr. Huizhao Tu specializes with Transport Risk Management, including Network Reliability Analysis, Emergency Transportation Management, Transport Data Fusion, Travel Behavior Modeling and Transport Planning& Management. He is currently a full Associate Professor with College of Transportation Engineering, at Tongji University, China. He was with Department of Transport & Planning, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, where he was a Researcher from 2003 to 2010. From 2003 to 2010, he participated in several Dutch projects on reliable traffic monitoring and emergency traffic management, and from 2010 till now, he participated in several Chinese projects (e.g. NSFC projects) in the field of emergency driving behavior and multimodal travel time reliability. Dr. Tu is a member of IEEE, an Associate Editor for the 16th IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems (The Hague, The Netherlands, 2013).

Research interests

The airport is a new growth point of China's transport infrastructure. It is facing multiple pressures in new construction, renovation/reconstruction, expansion and maintenance. The airside of an airport is the basic platform of aircraft taking-off/landing, but also to keep the safety and efficiency of the ground. The research team aims at emerging technologies in the intelligent airport pavement, focusing on the the topics of active perceiving and precise evaluation of runways, joint analyzing of infrastructure performance and safety risk, the integration of the development of assembly and intelligent. In the coming three years, this purpose of the research team is to set up the fundamental theory of intelligent infrastructure and risk management of airport airside, to propose the basic intelligent solutions and the measures of risk management, such that it can effectively improve the technical level of China's airport construction and management, operational efficiency, safety and reliability.
