With the unremitting efforts of several Tongji generations, the College now possesses the top-ranking discipline platform. Road and traffic engineering research laboratory was established in 1982, and became the open research laboratory of State Education Commission in 1983. In 2000, it was appointed as the key laboratory of road and traffic engineering of the Ministry of Education. The College established the Road Traffic Safety and Environment Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education in 2007 and was awarded as the Heavy Traffic Road Durability and Safe Traffic and Transportation Industry Collaborative Innovation Platform in 2014.
After the continuous efforts in construction of “211 Project and 985 Project”, the overall strength of our discipline platform has a significant improvement and the scale of fixed assets of the Laboratory has surpassed 1300 million. Especially, the road and airport pavement accelerated load test platform, travel behavior and traffic safety holographic simulation platform have reached the international leading level. The multi-structure and scale road pavement experimental system, asphalt mixture performance test system, highway and railway engineering high frequency overloads experiment system, computer tomography apparatus, four-rotor UAV, natural driving experiment platform, traffic control and simulation system, vehicle-to-infrastructure information exchange system, train control system are ranked as the international advanced level. The college has become one of the research laboratories entitled with“widest coverage, most comprehensive and highest research level” in the field of international land transport. It is also the main research base of the major scientific and technology achievements in the field of traffic engineering, and acts as the important medium of international exchanges.
The College has established the experimental teaching center of traffic and transportation engineering, which are accessible with all the platforms and equipments of the Laboratory. Meanwhile, it has established the national college students off-campus practice base, 4 national engineering practice teaching centers and more than 40 off-campus professional training bases, providing superior conditions for the education of excellent engineers.
