Degree Awarding Standards

The degree awarding standards for this discipline include criteria for ideological quality, course/credit requirements, knowledge standards, competency standards, thesis standards, and academic publication standards. To apply for the degree, candidates must meet at least the following conditions:

1.Must not have obtained enrollment eligibility or graduation certificates through illegal means, and must not have committed any serious illegal acts during the degree candidacy period.

2.Must have passed all required course assessments and earned the required credits.

3.Must have completed the degree thesis and passed the thesis defense.

4.Must meet the academic publication standards for degree application as set by the discipline.

5.The degree thesis and any academic publications submitted for the degree application must not involve academic misconduct.

Among these, the academic publication standards are as follows:

Academic Master's degree candidates must satisfy one of the following conditions (1) to (4):

(1) The candidate has published one paper or has one A-category paper accepted (see relevant notes for publication requirements).

(2) The candidate has achieved one of the following equivalent academic accomplishments within the Transportation Engineering discipline:

1) One authorized invention patent (the candidate must be the first inventor; or the supervisor is the first inventor and the candidate is the second).

2) One provincial/ministerial-level or above government science and technology award (the candidate's ranking is not limited).

3) One disciplinary competition award: Gold or Silver award in the China International College Students' 'Internet+' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the 'Challenge Cup' National Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition, or the 'Challenge Cup' China College Students' Business Plan Competition (the candidate must be ranked within the top three); First prize in the China Graduate Mathematical Modeling Contest (the candidate must be ranked within the top three).

(3) Passed the school-level anonymous review: Before applying for the thesis defense, the candidate submits a manuscript for review, based on the core content of the degree thesis and meeting the standards of the discipline's core journals. This manuscript, along with the degree thesis, must be submitted to the school for anonymous review and pass.

(4) Passed the university-level blind review: The candidate may apply to use the university-level blind review (the degree thesis is reviewed by 2 experts in a university-level blind process) to replace the school-level anonymous review. Each student is limited to one such application.

* If the university-level blind review scores are below 90 and the candidate has not published an academic paper meeting the degree standards, they must still submit a manuscript for review (as described in condition 3) to the school for anonymous review and pass it before the defense.

* If all university-level blind review scores are 90 or above, the school-level anonymous review of the submission manuscript is not required.

Relevant Notes

1.Publication Requirements:The applicant must be the first author (including cases where the supervisor or co-supervisor is the first author and the applicant is the second author) or the corresponding author for an international academic journal (the same paper can only be used for one graduate's degree application). The paper must be published in a journal or academic conference recommended by the Academic Degree Sub-committee of Transportation Engineering (see attached list). Furthermore, the affiliation for both the first author and the graduate applicant must include both the Tongji University College of Transportation Engineering and a laboratory under the College of Transportation Engineering (for specific laboratory affiliation requirements, refer to the "2025 Master's Degree Awarding Standards for the Transportation Engineering Discipline").

2.Review of Academic Achievements:Academic achievements must be reviewed and approved by the Transportation Engineering Discipline Committee prior to the thesis defense. Interdisciplinary papers or other academic achievements published in journals or conferences listed in the recommended catalog of the relevant Tongji University Academic Degree Sub-committee that require recognition may be considered as degree-application papers after being certified by the Academic Degree Sub-committee of Transportation Engineering.

3.Off-Campus Supervisors:If the primary supervisor is an off-campus adjunct professor (or teacher), academic achievements where the designated on-campus co-supervisor (must be formally filed and recorded by the College) is the first author and the student is the second author can be recognized. The term 'co-supervisor' referred to in academic achievements is only valid under the premise that the primary supervisor is an off-campus adjunct doctoral supervisor.

4.Affiliation Requirement:Published papers, authorized invention patents, government science and technology awards, and disciplinary competition awards must list Tongji University as the first publication/authorization/award-winning unit.

5.International Students:International students following the same academic system and training mode are subject to the same academic requirements and academic level standards stipulated in these discipline degree standards.

For detailed degree awarding standards, please refer to the "2025 Master's Degree Awarding Standards for the Transportation Engineering Discipline" formulated by the Academic Degree Sub-committee of Transportation Engineering.
