主讲人简介:

Professor Amer Shalaby received his M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1996. He was promoted to Professor in 2012 and has since become a leading figure in transit engineering and analytics. More recently, he established the Transit Analytics Lab (TAL) at the University of Toronto which achieved instant success and a worldwide reputation due to its novel research outputs and solutions. Professor Shalaby has also co-founded the Centre of Automated and Transformative Transportation Systems (CATTS), which has gained a distinct reputation for its novel mobility solutions. Due to his proven leadership record, Professor Shalaby was recently appointed to the director position of the world-renowned University of Toronto Transportation Research Institute (UTTRI), a recognized unit within the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering which encompasses a multitude of mobility-oriented research centres and initiatives.

Professor Shalaby is internationally recognized as an expert in transit engineering. His work has led to several impactful achievements, including the development of the Transit Equity Dashboard, a widely used online tool that evaluates how equitably transit networks serve major U.S. cities. This tool has informed transit policy and advocacy efforts across the country. He has also developed predictive models and decision-support tools to assess the impacts of ridership and ridesharing initiatives, which have been adopted by agencies such as OC Transpo and the City of Toronto. Furthermore, he led the development of DashBus, a decision-support platform for managing bus bridging during service disruptions. His recent research has applied advanced analytics, optimization techniques, and machine learning methods based on diverse data source to improve service quality and address social disorder incidents for Calgary Transit.

The research and publications of Prof. Shalaby focus on various aspects of public transit systems (including planning, scheduling, operations, technologies, etc.). In Google Scholar, he has 7,291 citations and 44 h-index. He has featured consistently over the past five years on the list of the world’s top 2% scientists, a list compiled annually by Stanford University and published by Elsevier. He also has a longstanding history of serving the academic community.

In addition to his research, Professor Shalaby has a distinguished record of academic service. He served as Associate Editor for the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering for eight years and currently sits on the editorial boards of several journals. He is also an active member of multiple Transportation Research Board (TRB) standing committees focusing on transit planning and operations.

主讲内容简介:

Automation, connectivity and AI offer many opportunities to overcome the persistent challenges faced by transit agencies to deliver high-quality and efficient street-running transit. This talk will report on several advancements that leverage emerging technologies and AI to improve the effectiveness of transit signal priority, explore new service concepts such as dynamic bus lanes and driver advisory systems, and develop new tools to detect, analyze and resolve transit operational anomalies such as bus bunching and overcrowding. The talk will provide a glimpse into the future of surface transit and how emerging technologies and AI might shape that future.
