主讲人简介:

Dr. Yu Qian is a Professor at the University of South Carolina. He earned his B.S. in Structural Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, an M.S. with honors in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Kansas, and both an M.S. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.His research advances intelligent and resilient railroad infrastructure, with emphasis on track inspection technologies, edge computing, and image processing.

Dr. Qian has authored more than 110 peer-reviewed journal articles and over 70 conference papers, and has secured more than $7 million in research funding from the National Academy of Sciences, the Federal Railroad Administration, and other public and private sponsors.

He currently serves as Secretary of the ASCE Rail Transportation Committee and contributes actively to TRB and AREMA committees. He is also the Associate Director of the newly established USDOT CRISI Center, Rail-CREST, reflecting his leadership in next-generation rail infrastructure. In addition, he serves as an Associate Editor for Transportation Geotechnics, Expert Systems with Applications, Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure, and Smart and Resilient Transportation, and as an editorial board member of the International Journal of Rail Transportation, Journal of Railway Science and Technology, and High-Speed Railway.

Dr. Qian’s contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize, the ASCE highest level mid-career research award in all areas of civil engineering. IDEA Award from the National Academy of Sciences, the TRB Best Paper Award, the USC Breakthrough Star Award, Young Investigator Awards, and six consecutive Dean’s Excellence in Research Awards (2021-2026).

主讲内容简介:

Railway engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering that encompasses various aspects of designing, constructing, and operating rail transport systems. With over 250,000 km of track, the United States operates the largest railway network in the world. Nearly 40% of the freight in the U.S. is transported through this rail network. Regular inspection and maintenance of railway tracks is critical for ensuring safe and efficient operations. Despite the significant demand for this work, there has been a lack of research and development in this area, leading to manual inspection processes and a heavy reliance on field experience for maintenance planning. This approach can be physically demanding, inefficient, and potentially inaccurate, and can sometimes result in accidents. To overcome the challenges posed by manual inspection processes, we have developed automated inspection methods for various applications to offer unprecedented efficiency and accuracy. This presentation will introduce our recent developments and applications of computer vision, artificial intelligence, and edge computing in the railway, transforming the track into an important component of the grand smart transportation system and connected community.
