Dr Xianying Zhang is a research fellow in the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton, UK, where she received her PhD degree in 2016. She has a variety of research interests in the structural vibration and sound radiation from aircraft, submarine and railway tracks including the passive and active control of noise from these structural vibrations. Her current research is on the dynamic properties of railway tracks and seeking mitigation measures to reduce the railway noise. She is the reviewers for the Journal of Sound and Vibration, Applied Acoustics, Acta Mechanica and Japan Society of Applied Physics.

The most important source of railway noise in most situations is rolling noise. In order to implement strategies of noise control in the system, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms of sound generation. A new engineering model has been proposed to predict the sound radiation from the rails and sleepers. In particular, the updated model for the rail radiation is based on a weighted average of the results obtained by using 2D boundary element method (BEM) models, allowing for the fact that the rail is either attached to a rigid ground (concrete sleeper) or located above an absorptive ground (ballast bed). For the improved sleeper radiation model, results from a 3D BEM model are used including three sleepers and an absorptive ballast surface. Besides, the ballast absorption and ballast vibration are studied; their influence on the sound power radiated from the track is evaluated. The new models for the rail and sleeper radiation have been combined with the TWINS model to predict the sound radiation from operational tracks and comparisons have been made with field measurements.
